Columbia, South Carolina-The winning streak for the Edward Waters softball squad was pushed to nine consecutive games on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Tigers swept an SIAC road doubleheader from the Lady Yellow Jackets of Allen University. Edward Waters earned two run-rule victories, 20-1 in Game One and 9-1 in Game Two to continue their dominance in their first full season as an SIAC member.
Game One: Edward Waters 20, Allen 1
Kylah Gardner started the scorefest off early in the top of the first inning with an RBI sacrifice that scored
Laura Scott to give Edward Waters a 1-0 lead. After that, the first of three consecutive big innings commenced for the visitiors. In the top of the second, Scott connected on two-RBI double,
Caitlynne Lamug hit an RBI single, a two-RBI double from
Tiara Peters, and Peters later scored on an attempted double steal to give the Lady Tigers a 7-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Jamiyah Holmes scored on an Allen error, a passed ball brought home
Katie Goodin, Scott came home on a passed ball, a Gardner RBI double, a Peters RBI single, a two-RBI triple from
Brooke Rice, and an RBI fielder's choice from Holmes culminated an eight run inning to push the advantage to 15-0. EWU added five more runs in the top of the fourth when
Hailey Barfoot smacked an RBI single to center,
Jodasea Peterson hit an RBI double, Rice plated two runs on an Allen error and
Caitlynne Lamug hit an RBI fielder's choice to put the contest away at 20-0. Allen was able to score a run in the bottom half of the fourth, but the damage was already done as Edward Waters emphatically took Game One.
As a team, Edward Waters totaled 18 hits, while holding Allen to just two hits in the contest. Scott led the EWU efforts, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI's and three runs scored.
Brooke Rice finished one homer short of hititing for the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, four RBI's and thre runs scored.
Milani Sablan continues to work her way back into her usual dominant form, posting seven strikeouts in just three innings of work to earn the victory.
Game Two: Edward Waters 9, Allen 1:
In the second contest of the day, it was Allen that got the scoring started in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on an EWU error to take a 1-0 lead. Edward Waters turned the tide in a major way in the top of the seventh inning.
Kylah Gardner hit a two-run homer,
Jazmine Lamug hit a solo shot to left, a
Laura Scott RBI allowed Jamiyah Holmes to score,
Caitlynne Lamug hit an RBI single,
Jade Mention's RBI effort brought C. Lamug to come home, and Mention later scored on a passed ball, capping a seven run fourth to give EWU the lead at 7-1. Edward Waters then brought an early close to things in the top of the fifth inning, when
Kayla Saunders hit a two-RBI homer over the left field wall to give EWU a 9-1 lead and the doubleheader sweep.
Gracie Mejia took the win for EWU, going 3.0 innings, allowing two hits, and striking out three.
Alyssa Charter-Smith was also strong in relief for the Lady Tigers, going 2.0 innings with six punchouts.
Edward Waters will finally bring their road trip to an end on Friday and Saturday with a three-game set against Benedict. A doubleheader will start things at 1:00pm on Friday, while a single contest closes things out on Saturday at 12:00pm.
