Baseball Cruises To Home Victory Over Thomas

Jacksonville, Florida-Edward Waters posted 10 hits and rode the momentum of a strong pitching performance to a dominant 8-1 victory over Thomas University on Wednesday evening at Henry L Aaron Field at James P. Small Memorial Park.

Edward Waters (4-2) and Thomas (2-9) went pitch for pitch through the first 4.3 innings, before the Tigers got things going offensively. 2B John Nobles hit an RBI double to center field to plate the first run, while two batters later, CF Daiton Pass hit a 2-RBI double to give the home team a 3-0 lead through five complete innings.

The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to pad their lead. DH Leonel Diaz hit an RBI single to right field, 3B Hugo Schoening scored on a passed ball, then Diaz was also able to come home on a Thomas error, doubling up the EWU lead to 6-0.

Thomas cut into the lead thanks to an EWU throwing error in the top of the 7th, but EWU added the final shots in the bottom of the 8th when a passed ball allowed LF Daquarius Thompkins and SS Payton Shubert to score, making it an 8-1 lead. Senior P Noah Santiago, making his return off of missing all of last season due to injury, was able to record the last three outs of the contest to preserve the Tigers seven run home victory.

Schoening led the Tigers at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a double, and two runs scored. Diaz and Shubert each finished their evenings, going 2-for-4 at the plate for Edward Waters. Sophomore Dwanye Maduro earned the victory on the mound for the Tigers with a solid performance. The St. Thomas, Virgin Islands native went 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, zero earned runs, one walk, and struck out six Nighthawks. Austin James entered in relief in the sixth inning, going 1.0 innings and recording two K's, Caden Hutchinson pitched 2.0 innings and struck out two, while Santiago closed things out in the ninth, recording a strikout as well.

The Tigers will open SIAC play on Friday as they begin a three-game set against Lemoyne-Owen. Due to rain that is expected to hit the Jacksonville area on Friday, the Tigers and Magicians will open their series with a doubleheader starting at 9:00am at Henry L. Aaron Field at James P. Small Park.
