Jacksonville, Florida-Edward Waters took a step out of conference play on Thursday night with a matchup against the Sand Sharks of USC Beaufort. The Purple & Orange were able to overcome a slow start to the contest with a 66-56 home victory, Thursday night at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
Edward Waters (3-3, 1-1 SIAC) found a bit of a lull in the first quarter of play, falling behind by as many as seven points to the visiting Sand Sharks (2-4, 0-0 PBC). The Lady Tigers were able to close the gap, only trailing 12-10 at the end of the quarter. EWU found their stride in the second leading by as many as 10 points and never surrendering the lead for the duration of the contest. The Sand Sharks cut the deficit to five at 28-23 going into the locker room.
The Lady Tigers were able to open the third quarter on a 10-2 run which greatly aided their efforts as EWU led 46-38 through three quarters of play. EWU seemed to have learned their lesson from a couple nights ago as they were able to close out the contest strong with a 10 point home win over the Sand Sharks.
EWU was able to get it done through their defensive efforts as 22 USCB turnovers turned into 25 points. The Lady Tigers put three players in double figures, led by
Kayla Horton with 16 points and four assists.
Sha'Kawanza Brown finished with 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, and a block, and
Kyana Johnson had her first double-double effort of the season with 11 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks.
The Lady Tigers will begin a three-game road trip starting on Saturday, December 2nd with a return trip to Alabama for a conference matchup against Miles College. Tip-off from Knox-Windham Gym is slated for 2:00pm CST/3:00PM EST.
