Hialeah, Florida-The 2023 regular season for the Edward Waters women's soccer squad will go down as its most successful and impactful season since the birth of the program in 2020. The Lady Tigers emphatically concluded the regular season with a 4-0 road shutout at Florida National at Ted Hendricks Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Edward Waters wasted little time hitting the scoreboard as
Claudia Mate found the back of the net in the 12th minute of the match to take an early 1-0 lead, an advantage they were able to take into the halftime break. The Purple & Orange started the second half strong, thanks to a goal from
Libby Brown from
Sophia Paffrath in the 55th minute to double up the advantage. Junior striker
Dahien Cabrera made an significant return to the EWU lineup following her service to the Dominican Republic Senior Women's National Team for two games in qualification for the 2024 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Cabrera was able to put the contest out of reach with goals in the 59th and 65th minutes respectively to give the squad their second shutout of the season and bring the regular year to a close.
The Lady Tigers peppered the Florida National (0-9-2) squad with shot after shot in the match, finishing the match with 32 total shots annd 13 being on goal. The Conquistadors only had four total shots in the match with none being on goal. EWU also took a 5-3 advantage over Florida National in corner kicks.
Cabrera led the Lady Tigers with eight total shots in 85 minutes of work, while Paffrath and Brown each had six shots for Edward Waters.
Sheila Pascual earned a clean sheet in the match and was not called on to make any saves.
Edward Waters closes the regular season with an 8-5-2 overall mark, the best record in the brief history of the program. The squad is planning on participating in a postseason tournament with further details to be announced at a later date.
