Durham, North Carolina-A history making season for the Edward Waters women's soccer squad will continue for one more game as the Lady Tigers pushed past Bluefield State 5-2 in the opening matchup of the inaugural NCAA Division II HBCU Independent Women's Soccer Championship, Saturday morning at Durham County Stadium.
Edward Waters (9-5-2) and Bluefield State (4-12-1) battled their way to a scoreless draw through one half of play, then the offensive floodgates began to open up. Just three minutes into the second half,
Libby Brown hit the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later in the 50th minute,
Dahien Cabrera scored her 15th goal of the season to double up the advantage at 2-0.
Sophia Paffrath got into the scoring act in both the 54th and 69th minutes respectively to put the contest away at 4-0. The Big Blue scored the next two goals in the 78th and 85th minutes respectively to cut into the lead at 4-2, but
Miniya Browning pushed EWU to a three-goal advantage again with a late goal in the 89th minute to earn a spot in the Championship Final.
The Lady Tigers put up 19 shots, with 12 on goal, while BSU tallied 11 shots, eight of them on goal. Cabrera led the scoring opportunities for the Lady Tigers with five shots, three of them on goal, while Paffrath had three shots with all three being on goal.
Miniya Browning also had three shots with three of them on goal as well.
Sheila Pascual earned the win in goal, turning away four shots from Bluefield State.
EWU will next face the winner of the Virginia State/Shaw University matchup in the Championship Final on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm.
