Jacksonville, Florida-For the second consecutive game, an Edward Waters women's basketball contest went into overtime. Unfortunately for the Purple & Orange, this time would not go in their favor as the Lady Tigers dropped a 79-70 SIAC home decision to Kentucky State on Monday evening at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
Edward Waters (2-3, 1-2 SIAC) was blitzed early in the first quarter, falling behind by as many as 14 points. The Lady Tigers seemingly found their stride in the second quarter, chopping the deficit to as little as three points, ultimately trailing 32-27 at halftime. The third quarter was dominated by EWU, outscoring Kentucky State (4-1, 2-0 SIAC) 24-9 to take a 51-41 lead into the fourth. The Lady Breds returned the favor in the fourth, cutting the EWU lead down to two points with 6:48 remaining. EWU had an opportunity to ice the contest with :17 remaining, but two missed free throws hampered the Lady Tiger efforts. A late foul on EWU with :04 remaining in regulation put KYSU on the line and they were able to sink both free throws to tie the contest. EWU's
Paige Sanders nearly hit a half court shot that would have won the contest, but it bounced off the back of the rim, sending the contest to overtime.
The Edward Waters offense was stuck in neutral in the extra stanza, as Kentucky State outscored the Lady Tigers 12-3 in overtime to earn the nine point victory.
One of the main culprits of the Lady Tiger woes in the contest, was their rebounding as they were on the wrong side of a 51-41 edge in rebounding, including a 20-16 deficit on the offensive glass.
Khadija Smith led Edward Waters with 19 points, six rebounds, and two assists, while
Kayla Horton had 17 points, including going 4-of-7 from three point range, while also adding eight boards.
Edward Waters will wrap up their three-game homestand on Thursday, November 30th with a non-conference contest against USC Beaufort. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30p at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
