Jacksonville, Florida-The stellar play of junior guard
Goliath Mitchell, continues to turn heads in the early portion of the Edward Waters men's basketball season. Saturday's effort was no different as his 29 point were a major catalyst in the Tigers' 81-76 win over Central State in their home and SIAC opener at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
Both teams came out of the blocks slowly in the contest with the first basket not being scored until four minutes into the contest, by Central State (1-5, 0-1). The remainder of the half was a back and forth affair with the Marauders ultimately scoring on a jumper with no time remaining to take a 43-42 lead into the halftime break.Â
The second half was owned by Edward Waters (2-4, 1-0 SIAC) as they bombarded the Marauders from three point range. The Tigers led by as many as 13 point midway through the half, leading 69-56 with 10:43 remaining. Central State was able to go on a run to cut the lead down to two points at 75-73 with 4:57 left. Back-to-back steals and breakaway dunks from Mitchell pushed the advantage back to six at 79-73 with 3:57 left. Central State could only come as close as three points of the lead, but EWU was able to hold off the Marauders down the stretch to take the win.
The Purple & Orange shot 40% from the floor on 31-76 shooting, including a 45% evening from behind the arc. Central State shot 49% from the floor on 28-57 shooting. Following Mitchell's 29, was
Kristian Ford who scored 20 points, including going 4-9 from three point range and
Trevino Glover who scored 15 points off of the Tiger bench.
A change in schedule will see Edward Waters next hit the floor on Thursday, November 30th with a non-conference home contest against USC Beaufort at 7:30pm at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
