Slow Start Sends Tigers To Road Loss At Flagler

St. Augustine, Florida-Tuesday's contest against Flagler was the first time the two First Coast squads met on the basketball floor since the 2008-09 season. Edward Waters again could not find their offensive mojo early in the contest, falling to the Saints 83-70 in a non-conference affair at Flagler Gym at Clark Family Court.

The Tigers (1-4, 0-0 SIAC) met an offensive buzzsaw in the early goings of the contest, falling behind 13-0 with 15:57 left in the first half. Edward Waters was able to wake up, going on a 17-6 run over the next nine minutes to cut the deficit to two at 19-17. A Flagler (2-3) late run in the half, pushed their lead back to double digits at 41-28 at halftime.

In the second half, the Saints stretched their lead out to as many as 30 points, leading 75-45 with 9:42 remaining in the game. Edward Waters did show some resolve to close the contest on a 16-2 run, but the damage was already done as the early 13-0 deficit turned out to be the difference in the final scoreline.

Flagler outshot Edward Waters 50% to 43% from the floor, including a 42% to 22% advantage in three point shooting. The Saints also took a 43-31 edge on the boards including a 9-7 advantage in offensive rebounding. Turnovers continue to haunt the Tigers as well with 20 in the contest that resulted in 15 Saints points.

Edward Waters put three players in double figures in the contest, led by junior guard Goliath Mitchell with a game high 23 points and five rebounds. Junior transfer guard R. J. Noord had 12 points and six boards, while junior transfer forward Nebie Tesfa had a season high 10 points off the Tiger bench.

The Tigers will take Thanksgiving off, before finally coming home on Saturday, November 25th for their home and conference opener against Central State. Tipoff from the Adams-Jenkins Complex is slated for 5:00pm.
