Jacksonville, Florida-In front of over 2,000 school aged children from across Greater Jacksonville, the Edward Waters women's basketball squad rolled to an impressive 78-38 home victory over the visiting Eagles from the University of Fort Lauderdale in the 2023-24 season opener Monday morning at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
Edward Waters (1-0, 0-0 SIAC) relied heavily upon their calling card over many successful seasons under head coach
Charmaine Wilson, who began her 13th season in charge, turning stifling defense into offense. In the matchup, the Lady Tigers turned 24 UFTL (1-4) turnovers into 28 points, while also dominating the boards to a 66-41 advantage, including a 25-10 edge on the offensive boards.Â
The play of graduate guard/forward
Lee'Sha Henry carried much of the day for Edward Waters off of the bench. The Daytona Beach native turned in career highs in points with 17 and rebounds with 12 to lead the EWU effort. Redshirt-junior guard
Tatum Hayes had a solid return to the floor after her season ending knee injury which limited her to just six games last year. Hayes finished with 12 points on the afternoon while also adding two steals and two assists to her stat sheet. Newcomer
Alexandria James-Fearon and returners
Isis Smith and
Kyana Johnson each had nine points, while fellow newcomer
Imani Harris had eight points and nine boards for the Lady Tigers.
EWU will hit the road for a couple of non-conference crossover contests in Alabama. The Lady Tigers will face LeMoyne-Owen on Friday, November 17th at 4:00pm, then on Saturday, will face Miles at 4:00pm with both contests being in Birmingham.
