Durham, North Carolina-The successful 2023 regular season for the Edward Waters women' soccer squad came to an end on Sunday with a 3-1 loss to Shaw in the Final of the inaugural NCAA Division II HBCU Women's Soccer Championship at Durham County Stadium.
The Lady Tigers quickly fell behind in the first half, just 17 minutes in when the Lady Bears fired the opening salvo to take a 1-0 lead. Just before halftime in the 35th minute,
Dahien Cabrera put the Purple & Orange on the board with her team leading 16th goal of the season to square the match at 1-1. The second half did not go the way of Edward Waters as Shaw scored in the 42nd and 88th minutes respectively to put the contest out of reach as the Lady Tigers had to settle for the runner-up position.
Shaw outshot Edward Waters 11-6 in the match, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Cabrera led all players in the contest with four total shots, two of them being. on goal.
Sheila Pascual played all 90:00, turning away four shots in the match.
Despite the loss, Edward Waters closed the season with 9-6-2 mark, their best since the inception of the program in 2020. The Lady Tigers will head into the offseason with positive momentum and will look to make a bigger impact in 2024.
