Lady Tigers Outlast Clark Atlanta To Advance To SIAC Title Game

Jonesboro, Georgia-A lengthy delay after the first set was not enough to deter the East Division Champion Edward Waters women's volleyball as they were able to hold off a stiff challenge from East #3 seed Clark Atlanta and earn a 3-2 victory in the semifinal round of the Cricket SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship.

Edward Waters (22-6, 18-2) shot out to a 25-17 set one victory to take the early 1-0 advantage. At the onset of Set #2, a power outage hit the facility causing nearly an hour delay in the match. The Lady Tigers were ultimately take a 25-18 win in the set to take a 2-0 lead. Clark Atlanta (21-10, 14-5 SIAC) took advantage of their home area and took the next two sets 25-19 & 25-17, squaring the match, thus sending it to a fifth and deciding set. Despite injuries to both Damari Johnson and Fatima Ramirez, the Purple & Orange were able take care of business, 15-11 to win the match and advance to the Championship Round for the second straight year.

Edwad Waters was able to take a slight .184 to .169 advantage in hitting percentage. Each squad had 56 kills in the match, with CAU taking a 6-5 edge in service aces and in digs at 64-60, while EWU had the edge in blocks (15-14) and assists (54-53). Ramirez showed why she was the Player of the Year for the second straight year with a gutsy double-double effort with 20 kills and 13 digs,. Naomy Vergez Verona also had a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs, while also adding five blocks and two assists to her stat line. De'Nyla Harlan also contributed a double digit kill effort with 13 for the Lady Tigers.

Damari Johnson finished with eight blocks on the evening for EWU while Setter of the Year Mataiya Barber had 45 assists and Jenieth Guzman finished with 14 digs.

It will be a rematch of the 2022 final as Edward Waters will meet West Division and multiple time champion Spring Hill in the Championship Match at 8:00pm.
