Lady Tigers Fall To Spring Hill In SIAC Championship Game

Jonesboro, Georgia-It was a matchup of the top two teams in the SIAC as East Division Champion Edward Waters met West Division Champion Spring Hill for the second straight year in the Cricket Wireless SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship Game Friday evening at the Tsunami Volleyball Center. Edward Waters was able to take the first set of the contest between. the two squads, but the Badgers took the next three on their way to their fifth straight conference championship.

An adrenaline filled Edward Waters squad, who earlier in the the day had to overcome a tough Clark Atlanta squad in five sets and a near hour long delay in that match due to a power outage had to quickly turn their attentions to the defending champions. The Lady Tigers came out fired up, motivated, and for the first time in three previous meetings with Spring Hill were able to take a set from the Badgers, winning set #1 25-21. Edward Waters had a chance to take a 2-0 lead on SHC in Set #2 leading 22-21 however, Spring Hill was able to go on a 4-1 run to take the set 25-23 and square things up at a game apiece. Spring Hill was able to use the momentum to take the next two sets to win the match and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Tournament.

Edward Waters was led by both Fatima Ramirez and Naomy Vergez Varona who each turned in double-double efforts. Ramirez had 17 kills, including four service aces, and 12 digs, while Vergez Varona also had 17 kills and 14 digs. De'Nyla Harlan also had 10 kills for EWU in the match as well. Mataiya Barber dished out 44 assists for the Lady Tigers, while Jenieth Guzman tied for the team lead in digs with 14.

The Lady Tigers conclude their season with a 22-7 overall mark, their third straight season of 20+ victories, a 17-2 regular season record against SIAC competition, their second straight SIAC East Division Championship, and second consecutive tournament runner-up finish.
