Jacksonville, Florida-The Edward Waters women's volleyball squad continued to show their resilience and domination over the SIAC's Eastern Division on Saturday afternoon with a gutsy 3-1 victory over Clark Atlanta at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
The Lady Tigers (18-5, 15-1 SIAC) came out firing in the first set, dominating their way to a 25-10 win. However, Clark Atlanta (15-9, 11-5 SIAC) proved that they would not go away quietly, making the remainder of the match quite interesting. Edward Waters was able to come away with a 25-21 win in Set #2 to take a 2-0 lead in the match, but the visitors from Atlanta were able to take Set #3 25-19 to make it a 2-1 EWU lead. Set #4 appeared to be going the way of the Lady Panthers leading 22-18 late in the match. However, the Purple & Orange were able to go on a 7-0 run down the stretch to win the set 25-22 and earn another critical division win.
Edward Waters was able to amass a .260 hitting percentage in the match with 53 total kills, compared to .182 for the visitors on 47 kills.
Fatima Ramirez continues to make a strong case for her second SIAC Player of the Year nod, leading her team with a double-double effort (26 kills, 10 digs, & 3 service aces).
Naomy Vergez Varona also had a solid all-around contest for EWU with nine kills, one service ace, three blocks, three assists, and 12 digs.
Damari Johnson led EWU's defensive efforts with four blocks, while
Mataiya Barber dished out 39 assists.
The Purple & Orange will head north to Savannah to battle Savannah State in their next action on Monday, October 30th with first serve from Tiger Arena slated for 6:00pm.
