Savannah, Georgia-Trailing by double digits for a majority of their contest, Edward Waters attempt at a come-from-behind victory fell short in their 73-62 SIAC road loss to Savannah State on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Arena.
The Lady Tigers (8-9, 4-5 SIAC) faced a barrage of shots from SSU (12-4, 8-3 SIAC) in the first quarter and fell behind quickly at 25-13 at the end of the quarter. Savannah State added to their lead in the second quarter, leading by as many as 17 points at the midway point. EWU ultimately chopped the lead down to 12 at halftime, trailing 37-25.
The third quarter again was owned by Savannah State, nursing their double digit lead throughout the quarter. Edward Waters was able to get the lead to single digits late in the quarter, but two free throws from SSU pushed the advantage again to double digits at 57-46 through three quarters of play. Edward Waters started the fourth quarter incredibly hot, going on a 13-3 run to improbably cut the lead down to two at 61-59 with 3:28 remaining in the quarter. SSU fired back with a run of their own, aided by several critical turnovers down the stretch, outscoring EWU 12-3 to provide the final margin of victory.
Savannah State ended the contest with a 32% to 28% edge in shooting over Edward Waters. EWU did enjoy a 31% to 28% edge in shots from three-point range. SSU also widely dominated the rebounding battle, 50-39, including a 17-13 advantage in offensive rebounding. Team Co-Captain
Molly Ragle led the Lady Tigers with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including going 2-of-4 from three-point range.
Emari Bell, who made her first start of the season, chipped in with 11 points, while
Isis Smith wrapped up her afternoon with 10 points.
Edward Waters will look to rebound at home on Monday, January 22nd against Benedict at 5:30pm at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
