Tigers Dominate Atlantis For Homecoming, Win Third Straight

Jacksonville, Florida-Returning home to Glover Community Field & Stadium had literal meaning for Edward Waters on Saturday. It was the first time in three weeks that the Tigers played a contest at home and it was Homecoming 2022 for Edward Waters. The Purple & Orange put on a show for the home faithful, dominating visiting Atlantis University 71-0 and moving their win streak to three in a row. Additionally, it runs the Tigers Homecoming winning streak to now three and the second most points scored in a football contest since football returned campus in 2001. In 2015, The Tigers defeated the University of Faith 76-7, the high point for scoring for EWU.

Edward Waters (4-6, 3-4 SIAC) scored touchdowns in all three phases of the contest with 10 total (7 offensive, 1 defensive, and 2 on special teams.). The Tigers also had several short fields in the contest virtually living on the Atlantis (1-4) side of the 50 yard line. The day belonged to the vaunted EWU ground attack, posting 299 yards rushing with six rushing TDs. The Tigers defense held Atlantis to 110 total yards and also added an interception to boost their SIAC leading total to 11 picks on the season.

The Tigers opened the scorefest by taking the opening drive 39 yards on six plays and culimnated it with a four-yard rushing TD from De'Shaun Hugee to take an early 7-0 lead. EWU made it a two score game on their second drive at the 6:26 mark of the 1st quarter on a 10-yard rushing TD from Spencer Carter, pushing the score to 14-0. On Atlantis' ensuing drive, linebacker Widmyer Garçon stepped in front of a pass and took it back 35 yards for a pick six. The Tigers converted a two-point conversion on a pass from Tyberious Horne to Cortland Faison to make it 22-0.

The second quarter got started with a Tyler King one-yard rushing touchdown, stretching the lead to 29-0 with 14:52 remaining. Atlantis finally got on the board with a 14-yard TD pass to wipe away the hopes of an EWU shutout, making it a 29-6 ballgame. The Tigers responded in-kind with Spencer Carter rushing for his second TD of the game from 12-yards out to give EWU a 36-6 lead. The aerial attack was able to get in the game thanks to an 15-yard touchdown pass from backup QB Keith Moore to Damaris August stretching the lead to 43-6. Reserve RB Leonard Shoultz pounced on a botched snap on an AU punt and rumbled 21 yards for a TD to make it a 50-6 contest at the 1:59 mark of the quarter. EWU closed the first half strong with a five-yard rushing TD from Daniel Ingram to give the Tigers a commanding 57-7 lead at the half.

Both teams agreed to shorten the second half to two 10:00 quarters, but that did not stop the EWU scoring attack. Freshman WR Fate Simmons scored the second EWU Special Teams TD with a three-yard scoop and score on another Atlantean botched snap to make it a 64-7 contest with 7:13 remaining. The scoring was mercifully ended with 1:45 remaining in the 3rd, thanks to a Shoultz 16-yard TD to give the Tigers a 71-6 lead, more than enough to cruise to a convincing Homecoming victory.

Jyron Russell led EWU going 5-of-7 passing for 40 yards. Leonard Shoultz was the Tigers' leading rusher with three carries for 63 yards and a TD, while Spencer Carter had five carries for 58 yards and two TDs. Defensively, Quintorrio Powell led the Tigers with five total tackles.

Edward Waters will conclude the 2022 campaign next Saturday at home in the 3rd Annual AME Football Classic. The Tigers will lock up with rival Allen University at 2:00pm at Glover Community Field and Stadium and will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.
