Mobile, Alabama-For the first time in program history, the Edward Waters Women's Volleyball squad will compete for an SIAC Championship. The Lady Tigers swept West Division #2 seed Lane College, 3-0 in the semifinal round of the Cricket SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship on Friday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
The Lady Tigers (26-9, 18-2 SIAC) got enormous contributions from SIAC Player of the Year Fatima Ramirez and the returning from injury Naomy Vergez Varona who each had a match high 11 kills apeach in the match. Saldy Amparo Smith, who played her second match since returning from injury, made the most of her extended playing time, recording 10 kills for EWU. Senior Audrianna Jones had three service aces in the match, while sophomore Catherine Richards led the Lady Tigers with five blocks, and SIAC Setter of the Year in freshman Mataiya Barber dished out 37 assists.
As a squad, Edward Waters hit .214 and held Lane (26-15, 13-6 SIAC) to a .139 hitting percentage. The Lady Tiger defense also paid big dividends in the match with seven blocks and 55 total digs.
The Championship Match will feature a collision course of the East Division Champion, Edward Waters against the West Division Champion and host school, Spring Hill. The Lady Tigers will look to avenge an earlier season loss and stop the Badgers streak of three consecutive SIAC Championships. First serve is set for 2:00pm EST/1:00pm CST in Mobile.
