Tigers Take Down Morehouse For First Victory Of Season

Jacksonville, Florida-One day delayed due to the affect of Hurricane Ian throughout the state of Florida, Edward Waters was able to relish in their first victory of the season, knocking off Morehouse 49-20 in an SIAC East Division matchup at Glover Community Field and Stadium.

Edward Waters (1-4, 1-3 SIAC) was at long last able to put together four quarters of solid football for the first time this season and dictated the pace to Morehouse (0-5, 0-2 SIAC) throughout the entire contest.  The Tigers aired the ball out to a tune of 338 yards passing and four passing touchdown. EWU's SIAC top two rushing offense also paid big dividends in the game, totaling three rushing touchdowns and 116 rushing yards as a unit.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first on their opening drive with a 15 yard rushing touchdown from junior RB Tyler King to give EWU a 7-0 lead with 10:44 remaining in the first quarter. EWU doubled up their advantage thanks to a three yard passing TD from graduate QB David Johnson to senior WR Tyberious Horne to extend their lead to 14-0 with 4:34 remaining in the quarter.

Morehouse was able to cut into the lead to start the second quarter with a rushing TD to bring the Maroon Tigers within one score at 14-7. On their ensuing drive, senior QB Jyron Russell found junior WR Johnny Jones for a 65 yard touchdown to push the advantage back to two score at 21-7 with 12:22 remaining in the second. Toward the late stages of the quarter, King found the endzone again, this time from 53 yards out to give EWU a commanding 28-7 lead with 5:08 remaining in the quarter, a score that would remain at halftime.

The EWU air attack continued in the third quarter when FAU transfer WR Yanez Rogers, Jr. was found on the opposite end of a 52 yard TD pass from Johnson to give the Tigers a 35-7 lead. MHC responded with a TD run with 9:35 left in the third. Tyler King for the third time in the contest found the endzone, this time from eight yards out to push the Tigers lead to 42-13. Morehouse scored a four yard rushing TD with 2:02 left in the third to bring the score a bit closer at 42-20. The Purple & Orange scoring fest concluded early in the fourth quarter, when freshman WR Fate Simmons scored his first collegiate touchdown from 17 yards out to give EWU a 49-20 lead and the victory.

Johnson finished his afternoon going 12-14 passing for a season high 211 yards and three touchdowns. Jyron Russell finished 3-6 passing for 91 yards and a TD. Tyler King had his best outing of the season, rushing for three touchdowns on nine carries for 96 yards. Senior WR Ferante Cowart led EWU receiving with two catches for 73 yards.

The newly coined "Super Gremlin" defense was led by sophomore LB Ahmanuel Thorpe and senior DB Ahmaud Jordan  with 10 tackles apiece. Senior LB Widmyer Garçon was the beneficiary of an interception in the fourth quarter to aid in the EWU defensive effort on the afternoon, while also contributing four tackles.

Edward Waters will have little opportunity to celebrate the victory as they will have a quick turnaround, next Saturday, October 8th as they will welcome the defending champions of the SIAC, the Golden Rams of Albany State University. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm at Glover Community Field & Stadium.
