Albany, Georgia-Edward Waters had a golden opportunity to take a firm grip of the SIAC East Division on Wednesday afternoon in a road contest against division co-leader Albany State. Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, it was an opportunity lost as the Golden Rams were able to come away with a five set victory (25-18, 16-25, 25-14, 12-25, 11-15) at the HPER Complex.
The two squads traded set victories in the first four sets, with Edward Waters (14-8, 9-2 SIAC) winning sets one & three and Albany State (12-6, 12-2 SIAC) taking a sets two & four, forcing a fifth and deciding set. The Purple & Orange fired the opening salvos in the final set, darting out to a 10-7 lead before the Golden Rams could respond. After an ASU timeout, the home team fired back in a big wave, scoring six straight points to take a 13-10 lead. Albany State was able to finish off the Lady Tigers, taking the final set 15-11, and earning the match win 3-2.
Albany State outhit EWU .141 to .126 while also recording 60 kills to 46 for the Lady Tigers. Leading the way for the Purple & Orange was
Fatima Ramirez with a double-double effort of 21 kills and 14 digs.
Audrianna Jones chipped in with 10 kills, while
Katarina Ribar finished with five.
Catherine Richards led the way for EWU defensively with four blocks, followed by
Saniya Spalding with three and Jones with two.
Mataiya Barber continues to have an impactful freshman season, recording 35 total assists in the match.
Edward Waters will continue their road trip on Saturday, October 15th as the Lady Tigers will travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to meet both Winston-Salem State and Virginia University of Lynchburg in a tri-match at 9:00am and 11:00am.
