Howard White, Jr. begins his second season at Edward Waters and his first as Interim Head Coach of the Men's Basketball team.
During White's first season as an assistant coach during 2020-21, he helped lead the Tigers to a 16-14 record and a semifinal appearance in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championships. In addition to his duties with the varsity squad, White also served as the head coach of the junior varsity team during their inaugural campaign in 2020-21.
The Wilmot, Arkansas native came to Jacksonville after spending one season as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Mississippi College for Women. In his lone season, he led the Owls to an 18-6 regular season record, and the 2019 USCAA Division I National Championship. For his efforts, White was selected as the 2019 USCAA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.
Prior to his time at "The W", White received his first head coaching position as the Head Women's basketball coach at Concordia College – Alabama, in the historic city of Selma, Ala. As a first time head coach, White found much success coaching the Lady Hornets. At the helm of the program, White led his team during the 2015-16 season to a 26-3 record and a USCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship. In his second season, White repeated the success of his first season with a 25-4 record in the 2016-17 season and another USCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, marking the sixth national championship in Concordia's history.
While at Concordia, White recruited and coached several All-American players including 2015-16 Player of the Year and first team All-American Shuntavia Harris, Academic All-American Carshava Suttun, second team All-Americans Erica Ousley and Lashanique Youngblood, 2016-17 first team All-American Teondra Crawford, and 2017 national tournament MVP Traniya Pitts.
Before his time at Concordia, White served as the 2009-11 Aiken Technical College assistant coach and worked at Benedict College, where he helped the Tigers win the 2011-12 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
His coaching resume also includes stints as the head assistant coach at St. Augustine's College, assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman, and assistant coach at the University of North Florida. Â At Bethune Cookman, he assisted in bringing in one of the best recruiting classes in the nation and at UNF he helped the Ospreys rise from a NCAA Division II program to NCAA Division I.
He began his coaching career at Florida State College at Jacksonville where he helped the Stars win two Mid-Florida Conference Championships.
As a player, White was a standout in his hometown at Wilmot High School. He served as the team captain and led the team in scoring his senior year.
