JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A pair of first-half goals from Rose-Bertude Rosinvil proved to be the difference Wednesday afternoon as the Edward Waters University women's soccer team earned a 2-1 home victory over Georgia Southwestern State University inside Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium.
The victory improved Edward Waters to 4-3-1 overall and kept the Lady Tigers unbeaten at home this season. Georgia Southwestern fell to 1-2-3.
Despite Georgia Southwestern generating the majority of the early offensive opportunities, Edward Waters made its chances count. Rosinvil broke the scoreless tie in the 36th minute, finding the back of the net at the 35:57 mark to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 advantage. Less than five minutes later, Rosinvil struck again, scoring at 40:26 to double the EWU advantage heading toward halftime.
Rosinvil's performance was remarkably efficient. The EWU defender accounted for the Lady Tigers' only two shots of the afternoon, putting both on target and converting both into goals.
Edward Waters also received a key defensive play from goalkeeper Solange Brown just before halftime. Georgia Southwestern was awarded a penalty kick at 41:42, but Brown denied Sydney Weslowski's attempt to preserve the Tigers' two-goal advantage going into the break.
Georgia Southwestern increased the pressure during the second half, outshooting EWU 7-0 over the final 45 minutes. The Hurricanes eventually cut the deficit in half in the 79th minute when Charlotte Reynolds scored off an assist from Ines Balaghni, making it a 2-1 contest with 11:51 remaining.
The Lady Tigers' defense was forced to withstand a late surge from the visitors. With Brown giving way to Gabrielle Hatch in the 76th minute, Hatch came up big down the stretch; recording saves in the 83rd, 86th, 87th and 89th minutes to help preserve the one-goal advantage.
Brown finished her 75:05 in goal without allowing a score and made two saves, while Hatch recorded five saves over the final 14:55. Together, the EWU goalkeepers totaled seven saves as Georgia Southwestern finished with a 14-2 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
Edward Waters ultimately made its two opportunities stand, securing its fourth victory of the season and continuing its unbeaten run on its home field.
The Lady Tigers will return to Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium on Friday, September 25, when they welcome Bob Jones University to Jacksonville. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
