EWU Lady Tigers Softball Falls Just Short on the Road Against USCB

Beaufort, S.C., -- The Edward Waters softball team come up short in both ends of their road doubleheader against USC-Beaufort on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opening game of the day, EWU fell to USCB 6-4.

USC-Beaufort got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after a double down the left field line, and a single up the middle, each scoring one run.

The Lady Tigers tied the game in the top of the second thanks to a tag up by Brooke Rice, and a sacrifice fly by Hailey Vela.

A walk by Dazha Durand gave EWU the lead, 3-2, in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Sand Sharks went back into the lead after Goodwin grounded out, and Alana singled to center field, each scoring one run.

Laura Scott homered to left field, which helped Edward Waters tie the game at four in the top of the fifth.

USCB jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after Taelor Chang doubled down the left field line, and Chang scored after tagging up, each scoring one run.

Riley Kapparis stepped in the circle first for EWU. The pitcher gave up nine hits and six runs over five innings, striking out one and walking one.

Calyn Rounsaville went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Tigers in hits. Scott, Vela, Kapparis, and Durand each drove in one run for EWU. Durand led Edward Waters with two walks.

In the doubleheader finale, EWU stayed in it until the end, but USCB pulled away late in a 3-2 victory. The game was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth when Makenzie Fore hit a solo home run to center field.

The pitching was strong on both sides. The Sand Sharks pitchers struck out 11, while the Lady Tigers sat down eight.

The EWU Lady Tigers were the first to get on the board in the first when Victoria Miterko doubled, scoring one run.

USC-Beaufort captured the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth after EWU committed an error, and Goodwin singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.

Edward Waters scored on a wild pitch, which helped EWU tie the game at two in the top of the sixth.

Keivana Durand took the loss for EWU. The pitcher went six innings, surrendering three runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out eight and walking three.

Miterko went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Klaire Spooner, Jodee Matos, Kylah Gardner, and Miterko each collected one hit for the Lady Tigers.
