Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters Softball team collected the doubleheader sweep over the Abraham Baldwin Stallions on Tuesday afternoon and NIP Sams Memorial Park.
In the opening game of the day, both teams were strong in the circle as EWU defeated ABAC 3-1.
Keivana Durand started the game for the Lady Tigers and recorded 21 outs including six strikeouts, bringing her total to 61 so far this season, which leads the SIAC. Durand improve her record in the circle to 4-3. The hurler gave up three hits and one run (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out six and walking two.
Edward Waters was the first to get on the board in the third when
Kylah Gardner doubled, scoring two runs.
Gardner drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Lady Tigers with two runs batted in. The outfielder went 1-for-2 on the day. Gardner,
Olivia Friedel, and
Dazha Durand each collected one hit for EWU.
The doubleheader finale came down to the wire as EWU grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 5-4, over ABAC. The game was tied at four in the bottom of the seventh when
Calyn Rounsaville drew a walk, scoring one run.
Brooke Rice collected three hits in four at bats in the win. Rice hit a home run to left field in the first inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the seventh inning.
Edward Waters got on the board in the first inning after Rice homered to left field, scoring two runs.
ABAC took the lead, 4-2, in the top of the third thanks to singles by Kendall Fowler, Alli Eidson, Emma Humphrey, and Ashley Archibald.
Laura Scott singled down the right field line on the ninth pitch of the at-bat, which helped the Lady Tigers tie the game at four in the bottom of the fourth.
Shai-Ann Currie earned the win for EWU. The reliever allowed two hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out none and walking one.Â
Riley Kapparis stepped in the circle first for EWU. The starter gave up nine hits and four runs over five innings, striking out two and walking none.Â
Kylah Gardner collected two hits for Edward Waters in four at bats.
Victoria Miterko led EWU with four walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game.
Edward Waters will welcome SIAC foe Fort Valley on Friday for a doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. before closing the seires with a single game Saturday with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.Â
