Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters softball team had trouble keeping up with Keiser University in their home doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at EWU Softball Field.
The Lady Tigers opened the afternoon with a tough 9-3 loss to the Seahawks.
EWU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Keiser committed an error, and Hailey Vela hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. A Keiser single to right field, helped tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the second.
Keiser University made the score 6-2 in the top of the third after a solo home run to left field. Another pair of singles scored three more runs.
The Seahawks scored one run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run to left field to make the score 7-2.
Masterink earned the win for Keiser University. The hurler surrendered six hits and three runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out five and walking three. Keivana Durand took the loss for the Lady Tigers. The pitcher went seven innings, surrendering nine runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out eight and walking six.
Kaylah Newman and Kylah Gardner each collected two hits for EWU. Brooke Rice, Vela, and Dazha Durand each drove in one run for Edward Waters.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Lady Tigers fall 8-0. A double put Keiser University on the board in the top of the first. A single and a double by the Seahawks helped Keiser University extend their early lead in the second.
Ganci homered to center field, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth for the Keiser University. Riley Kapparis took the loss for EWU. The starter went six innings, surrendering eight runs on 16 hits, striking out four and walking one.
Laura Scott and Olivia Friedel each collected one hit for the Lady Tigers. Edward Waters were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Scott had the most chances in the field with five.
The Lady Tigers will return to the diamond this weekend with a six game slate in the SIAC/CIAA Challenge held in Spartanburg, S.C. The contests will run Friday, February 14 through Sunday, February 16.
