Jacksonville, Fla. – In a heart-stopping finish inside Nathaniel Glover Stadium, the Edward Waters University Tigers came up just short in a 31–27 loss to the Benedict College Tigers on Saturday night. The defeat marks the second consecutive season that EWU has fallen to Benedict in the final moments, dropping Edward Waters to 4–3 on the season, while Benedict remains undefeated and atop the SIAC standings.
Despite the tough loss, the night belonged to running back Johntarrious Thomas, who delivered a historic performance. Thomas shattered Edward Waters' single-game rushing record, piling up 243 yards on 21 carries, including a pair of electrifying 50-plus-yard runs and a touchdown. His explosive effort was a bright spot for an EWU offense that fought hard against one of the conference's top defenses.
Quarterback Noah Bodden finished the game, completing 19 of 37 passes for 157 yards with two interceptions, while also adding 27 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. Receivers Makai Lovett and Fatoma Paulk led the aerial attack, each hauling in five receptions, with Lovett totaling 48 yards and Paulk adding 30.
On the defensive side, linebacker Trevon French anchored the Tiger defense with eight total tackles, while safety Akenon Rodgers contributed seven tackles and a key pass breakup. Defensive end Jamari Pierre added five tackles, including one tackle for loss and half a sack, helping keep Benedict's potent offense in check through much of the contest.
Special teams also provided a major spark when kick returner/wide receiver Kieren Jackson blocked a Benedict field goal attempt and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown, igniting the home crowd and swinging momentum late in the game.
Ultimately, Benedict was able to capitalize on a late scoring drive to seal the win, handing EWU another narrow defeat in a series that has become one of the SIAC's most thrilling matchups.
Edward Waters will now look to regroup and get back in the win column when they travel to Clark Atlanta University next week for the Panthers' Homecoming game on Saturday, October 25. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at CAU Panther Stadium, with live coverage available on HBCU GO.
