Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters Tigers opened their first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference(SIAC) East Division road trip with a pair of thrilling victories over Fort Valley State Saturday night and Albany State on Monday night.
After a 87-83 win over FVSU and a 74-64 triumph over ASU, the Tigers are now winners of four straight contests and boast a 11-5 record overall with a 7-2 mark in SIAC action.
Saturday's ballgame was filled with back and forth action from the opening tip with the lead switching back between the teams over 15 times. Late in the fourth quarter with just under a minute to play, senior guard
Kristian Ford knocked down a huge And 1 three-pointer to put the Tigers ahead 85-83. Then
Ja'Kobe Williams blocked a FVSU shot attempt leading to an
Amari Floyd slam to seal the game for EWU.
Freshman forward
Myles Hosten dominated with 22 points and eight rebounds and two blocks. Hosten was scorching hot as he connected on four of his five three-pointers and finished 8-of-15 for the game.
Kristian Ford added a crucial 18 points off the bench. Ford chipped in a game high three steals and with five rebounds.
Prince Davies III scored 16 points to go along with four rebounds and
Amari Floyd compiled an impressive all around game with 10 points, three assists and three rebounds.
Head Coach
Cabral Huff was impressed with how his team continues to find ways to win. "Another gutsy win by the Tigers on the road," expressed Coach Huff. "Tremendous effort by this team to persevere. Big shots down the stretch by
Myles Hosten, Kristain Ford, and
RJ Noord with a key defensive stop secured by
Ja'Kobe Williams. Also 17-for-17 from the free throw line was huge. This a "Find a Way" squad."
EWU carried their defensive tenacity into Monday night's victory over Albany State as they held the Golden Rams to just 36.2% shooting from the field. After taking a two point lead into the second half, the Tigers began to lock down defensively and increased their lead to 18 points down the stretch of the game.
Head Coach
Cabral Huff praised his squad's resolve and ability to finish plays around the basket. "I loved the way this team controlled the second half defensively, remarked Huff. "We harped on finishing defensive possessions at half time and we did. 16 assists as a team shows how we continue to trust one another as we continue to move forward. Great road win a hostile environment. True team win."
Amari Floyd played a terrific game scoring 20 points with five assists and three rebounds. Floyd shot 7-for-9 from the floor including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.
