Jackson, TN — The Edward Waters volleyball team competed hard but failed to pick up a victory in their four game slate at the Union Bulldog Volleyball Classic this weekend. The Lady Tigers played a pair of doubleheaders against Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello on Friday before wrapping up the tournament with matches against Ouachita Baptist and host institution Union University.
The Lady Tigers (0-7) got plenty of contribution from a host of players throughout the weekend tournament. Senior Naomy Vergez led EWU with 39 total kills, 25 digs and two service ace through the four games. Vergez collected a double-double in the squads matchup against Arkansas-Monticello with 13 kills and 10 digs. Vergez also compiled 12 kills in a loss to Union.
Junior Alexis Simpson tallied a season high 11 kills against Arkansas-Monticello and added nine digs against Ouachita Baptist. Simpson finished the weekend with 14 kills and 14 digs. Freshmen Brooklyn Jones, Taylor Kennedy, Ajiyah Jackson, Norah Laurore and Jewel Helmuth all played key roles for the Lady Tigers.
B. Jones finished with 19 kills and three digs while Kennedy added 18 kills, three digs and two blocks. Jackson notched nine kills while leading Edward Waters with three blocks. Laurore finished the tournament with 10 kills and Helmuth contributed 13 kills, seven digs and tied the team lead with three block through four games.
Setters Malena Catala and Dislandi Antonio combined for 100 total assists through four games with Catala compiling 41 total assists and Antonio led the Lady Tigers with 59 assists.
Edward Waters returns to the court next weekend as they have another four match tournament they participate in the SIAC Crossover. The Lady Tigers will take on Tuskegee and Spring Hill on Friday before finishing the tourney against Miles and Central State on Saturday. All the matches will be held at the HPER Complex in Albany, GA.
