Savannah, Georgia-A solid run at the Cricket SIAC Championships ended with a tough 70-64 loss to East Division #2 seed Morehouse on Friday evening at Tiger Arena.
A big first half was the difference in the game for the Maroon Tigers. Morehouse shot 40.7 percent (11-for-27) from the field and 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three, through the first 20 minutes on its way to 39 points. They also held Edward Waters to 31 points in the process, leading at the half.
Morehouse got out to a quick 6-0 lead early in the first, however Edward Waters woke up soon after, tying the game at 9-9. Both teams battled throughout the half that saw six ties and six lead changes in the first 20 minutes, yet Morehouse led for more than 12 minutes of play.
The second half was a similar story as the game remained close, with neither side getting much separation, despite Edward Waters not leading at any point in the half. Morehouse stretched its lead to double figures for the first time at 62-52 with 3:37 to go.
However, EWU continued to claw back, getting within single digits not long after, but could not fully complete the comeback, with the 70-64 final.
For the game, Edward Waters outshot Morehouse 40% to 38%, including a 28% to 24% edge in three point shooting. The pivotal number in the contest proved to be a wide disparity in free throw opportunities. Morehouse went to the free throw line 30 times in the matchup, while Edward Waters made just ten appearances at the charity stripe.
Jeremiah Kwarteng led the Purple & Orange with 16 points, while
Kristian Ford had 15 for the Tigers.
Edward Waters ends the season with a 12-18 overall mark, and a 9-12 conference record. The 2023-24 season laid a solid foundation for head coach
Cabral Huff to build upon for many years to come.
