Savannah, Georgia-A furious fourth quarter comeback attempt fell seven point short for Edward Waters as the Lady Tigers fell to Central State 78-71 in the Opening Round of the 2024 Cricket SIAC Basketball Championships Tuesday evening at Savannah State's Tiger Arena.
Edward Waters (9-18, 7-13 SIAC) trailed by six at the end of the first half, but a third quarter implosion proved to be rather costly for the Lady Tigers. The Purple & Orange fell behind by as many as 22 points in the third, ultimately trailing 59-38 going into the fourth quarter. With their season on the line, EWU methodically chopped the huge deficit down to single digits at 70-61 with 1:44 remaining. A
Kayla Horton three pointer with :35 remaining brought EWU to within five points of the lead, but Central State (13-14, 9-19 SIAC)Â was able to hit two key free throws down the stretch to end the basketball season for the Lady Tigers.
EWU struggled from the floor, shooting 30% on 24-80 shooting and were cold from beyond the arc, shooting 21% on 6-28 shooting. Conversely, the Marauders. were 28-59 from the floor (47%) and 9-19 from three-point range (47%). In her final contest in Purple & Orange, redshirt senior guard
Sha'Kawanza Brown finished with 18 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Junior guard
Kayla Horton also had 18 points and eight boards for the Lady Tigers.Â
