Edward Waters Upsets #11 Benedict In High Scoring Affair

Jacksonville, Florida-Edward Waters got a measure of revenge, protected their home floor, and sent shockwaves through the conference and the country on Monday evening with their 104-93 win over NCAA DII #11 ranked Benedict at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.

The Tigers (10-12, 9-7 SIAC) and Benedict (17-4, 11-4 SIAC) entertained the crowd with a high scoring, NBA-like affair in the contest with each team trading shots. Benedict opened the contest leading by as many as seven points five minutes into the first half, but the home team would not be denied. Edward Waters responded with an 11-5 run to take their first lead of the contest at 20-18 with 12:41 remaining in the first half. The Tigers would ultimately take a four point, 53-49 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Benedict was able to retake the lead early at 56-55 two minutes into the half, but Edward Waters once again had an answer with a 9-4 run to take a 64-60 lead with 13:54 left. The EWU lead would swell to as many as 12 points with just under seven minutes left in the half at 86-74, but Benedict cut the deficit to as little as three points with 2:20 left at 92-89. Again, EWU went on a run to push the advantage back out to double digits at 102-91 with less than a minute remaining and would close things out to take the victory.

EWU shot 61% from the floor (41-of-67) in the contest which was the highest percentage that a team has shot on Benedict this season. The Tigers three-point shooting was a major factor in the contest as well, going 11-of-22 (50%) from the bonus sphere.

Five Tigers were in double figures in the contest, led by Goliath Mitchell with a game high 31 points, while also adding seven rebounds and seven assists to his tally. Kristian Ford contributed 22 points while Trevino Glover had 16 and was a perfect 4-of-4 from three point range, Amari Floyd finished one rebound and one assist short of a triple-double with 13 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, and Adonnis Tolbert finished with 10 for Edward Waters.

Edward Waters begins a three-game road trip starting on Saturday afternoon against Morehouse at 2:00pm.
