Jacksonville, Florida-The Lady Tiger softball squad welcomed an old NAIA rival to town on Tuesday afternoon as EWU faced Brewton-Parker in a doubleheader at J. Gardner "Nip" Sams Memorial Park. The Lady Tigers dropped game one in a heartbreaker, 2-1 but showed resolve to rally back to take Game 2, 3-2 in extra innings.
GAME ONE: Brewton-Parker 2, Edward Waters 1:
The first game of the doubleheader proved to be a pitcher's dual between EWU's
Jodasea Peterson and Brewton Parker's Natalie O'Neal. Each pitcher along with their defensive mates turned in solid performances to make it a low scoring affair.
Edward Waters cashed in a
Katie Goodin RBI single center field in the bottom of the third inning to crack the scoreless deadlock and give the home team the lead. Things look good up until the top of the seventh inning, when with two outs, BPC scored two runs on an RBI double to left to take their first lead of the game at 2-1. The Lady Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the seventh and came away with a hard luck loss.
Peterson went all seven innings in the circle for EWU, allowed just four hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out three.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 3, Brewton-Parker 2 (10 Innings):
Game two proved to be a near repeat of game one with
Shai-Ann Currie in the circle for the Purple & Orange. The third inning proved to be the charm once again for EWU as
Brooke Rice hit an RBI single to give Edward Waters a 1-0 lead.
Fast forward to the seventh inning, when with two outs and a runner on second, the Barons hit a two-run homer over the center field wall to take the lead at 2-1. Unlike in the first game of the day, Edward Waters would prove to be up to the challenge as
Kayla Saunders' RBI sac fly brought home
Mhasiah Patterson to tie the contest up at 2-2 and sending the game to extra innings.
Both teams went scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings respectively as the contest headed to the 10th. BPC could not cash in on a runner at second situation, which gave EWU a chance to walk the contest off. With the bases loaded and one down, All-SIAC right fielder
Kylah Gardner hit what proved to be the game winning RBI single, allowing
Kayla Saunders to score and giving the Purple & Orange the walkoff victory.
Jade Mention, Gardner, and
Brooke Rice each recorded multi-hit games for EWU with two hits apiece. Currie went all 10 innings, allowed just two hits, two earned runns, one walk, and struck out two Barons.
Edward Waters will next head north to Spartanburg, South Carolina where they will take part in the annual CIAA/SIAC Challenge on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
