Winter Park, FL., -- The Edward Waters men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season after collecting a, 80-75 overtime victory over Rollins College in the DII South Regional Exempt Classic.
The Tigers got off to a hot start in the ball game shooting nearly 46% (17-37)from the field, including shooting a scorching 50% (6-12) from three-point range. The EWU defensive held the Tars to just 41% shooting from the floor with 37 points in the first half of action.
Despite carrying a 48-37 into the halftime intermission, the Tigers would be outscored 33-22 in the second half as Rollins forced the contest into overtime. But it would be Edward Waters who walked away victorious after outscoring the Tars, 10-5 in the extra minutes.
The Tigers bench played a vital role in the victory outscoring the Tars bench, 34-8 for the game. The Tigers also controlled the glass out rebounding Rollins, 45-41 in the contest.
Head Coach Cabral Huff was impressed with how his team completed the two game sweep in the DII South Regional Classic.
"Impressive gritty weekend for our guys to come down to the South Region Crossover Classic and walk away 2-0," said Huff. "What a big shot for from Trevino Glover, who is used to making those type of plays. And an amazing play call from Assistant Coach Chris Reedy who drew it up. That's who we are. Next man up mentality. We expect different guys to step up each game. Defensively a great effort to hold a team that scored 107 in the previous game to 70 in regulation and 75 total shows our mentality."
With the score tied at 73 apiece and Edward Waters with possession on the baseline under their basket, Trevion Glover ran off a screen set by Myles Hosten to the right corner and received an excellent pass from Ja'Kobe Williams. Glover knocked down a tough corner three-pointer while fading out of bounds to his right. The clutch basket would put the Tigers ahead 76-73 as they secured the big time victory.
Ja'Kobe Williams fell just one assists shy of a triple-double finishing with 11 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. Prince Davies III led Edward Waters with 18 points on off the bench. Davies III connected on four three pointers and went a perfect four for four from the charity stripe. Joseph Womack, Jr., tallied 11 points and three assists for EWU and Jeremiah Kwarteng added 10 points and four rebounds.
The Tigers will return to action with their home opener Wednesday, November 13 when they take on Voorhees University at 7:30pm inside the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
