Women's Volleyball Goes Perfect In Five Matches At SIAC Crossover

Albany, Georgia-Edward Waters made an emphatic statement at the SIAC Volleyball Crossover hosted by Albany State University. The Lady Tigers dominated all five of their matches over the two-day event, knocking off Central State, LeMoyne-Owen, and Lane in Day One on Friday. EWU closed out action on Saturday by sweeping both Kentucky State and Miles during Day Two action.

GAME ONE: Edward Waters 3, Central State 0:
The Lady Tigers opened crossover play against the Marauders of Central State on Friday morning and battled their way to a straight sets sweep. Edward Waters hit .173 in the match, holding the Marauders to a .067 hitting percentage. The EWU defense was also on point in the match, totaling six blocks against Central State.

Fatima Ramirez led Edward Waters with 12 kills, followed by Naomy Vergez Varona with six, and Brandy Gilberry with five. Ramirez also added four aces to her tally, while Vergez Varona led the way with three blocks. Mataiya Barber added 21 assists to her season total and Jeneith Guzman had eight digs to lead the way for the Lady Tigers.

GAME TWO: Edward Waters 3, LeMoyne-Owen 0:
Edward Waters had their most dominant showing of the crossover during their match against the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen. The Lady Tigers hit and eyepopping .537 in the match with 42 kills, 12 service aces, 37 assists and 30 digs. 

Fatima Ramirez once again led EWU with a match high 19 kills, while Naomy Vergez Varona had 10, including four service aces. Damari Johnson led the way defensively with three blocks, followed by De'Nyla Harlan with two and Vergez Varona with two. Barber had 34 assists, while libero Jenieth Guzman had 10 digs.

GAME THREE: Edward Waters 3, Lane 1:
Edward Waters met some resistance for the first time at the crossover in Friday's final contest of the crossover against the Dragons of Lane College. After darting out to a quick 2-0 lead after two sets, EWU appeared to be destined for another straight sets sweep, but the Lady Dragons were able to steal Set #3 25-23. The Lady Tigers were able to right the ship in Set #4, taking it 25-18 and sealing a sweep of the first three games of the crossover.

Fatima Ramirez had another phenomenal contest, leading the way with a double-double effort of 22 kills and 13 digs. Naomy Vergez Varona also got in the double-double act with 16 kills and 13 digs. Mataiya Barber dished out 40 assists in the matc for Edward Waters as well.

GAME FOUR: Edward Waters 3, Kentucky State 0: 
Saturday morning's opening contest saw the Lady Tigers battle the Thorobreds of Kentucky State. After battling in extra points to take a 26-24 win in Set #1, Edward Waters was able to find themselves, cruising their way to a 25-16 win in Set #2 and 25-15 in Set #3 to take the victory.

Ramirez picked up 15 kills in the match to lead the way, while Naomy Vergez Varona contributed eight kills and De'Nyla Harlan adding five. Mataiya Barber contributed 31 assists to the Lady Tiger cause, while Jenieth Guzman finished with 16 digs.

GAME FIVE: Edward Waters 3, Miles 0:
The Lady Tigers were able to close the crossover out in style, picking up their fourth straight sets victory, knocking off Miles in their final contest. EWU's .255 hitting percetage in the match to go along with 40 kills, 11 service aces, five blocks, 29 assists, and 39 digs certainly aided the victorious cause for the Lady Tigers.

Ramirez for the fifth straight contest at the crossover, led EWU with 16 kills, followed by Vergez Varona with 10 and Harlan with eight. Mataiya Barber added 27 assists, and Jenieth Guzman turned in an 11 dig performance fo the Purple & Orange.

Edward Waters will head to Mobile, Alabama on Saturday, September 30th for an SIAC Mini Crossover. The Lady Tigers will face Spring Hill in a rematch of last season's SIAC Tournament Championship game at 11:30am, then will battle Tuskegee at 1:30pm.
