Jacksonville, Florida-Desperately looking to notch their first victory of the season, Edward Waters treated the home faithful to a dominant performance, knocking off visiting Morehouse 44-13 in their SIAC home contest on Saturday evening at the Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium. For the Tigers, it was their third consecutive victory over Morehouse in the all-time series and their second straight contest in which the offense posted over 400 yards.
Edward Waters (1-3, 1-2 SIAC) came out of the gates swinging, taking their opening drive 61 yards, culminating in a 12 yard touchdown pass from
Jyron Russell to Stetson transfer wide receiver
Deven Thompson to give them a 7-0 first quarter lead. The Tigers added to their advantage at the 2:01 mark of the first quadter when
Irving Friedman connected on a 22-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.
The Purple & Orange hit the end zone for ther second time in the contest in the second quarter, when redshirt freshman running back Johntarrius Thomas scored his first collegiate rushing touchdown of his career from four yards out to extend the Tiger lead to 17-0. Senior RB
DeShaun Hugee got into the scoring act at the 4:41 mark of the second with a four yard rushing TD of his own, to give EWU a commanding 24-0 lead going into the locker room.
Morehouse (0-4, 0-2 SIAC) was able to thwart a shutout bid by the EWU defense, scoring on their opening drive of the third quarter to make it a 24-7 Edward Waters lead. The Purple & Orange responded with a touchdown of their own on their opening drive of the quarter as Thomas scored his second rushing touchdown of the contest, this one from 19-yards out to push the lead back to 24 at 30-7. The Maroon Tigers cut into the Tiger lead again at the 1:28 mark of the third on an 11-yard run to make it a 30-13 game. Nathan Rembert for a season long 70 yard TD pass to give EWU a 37-13 lead.
EWU capped off the scoring in the contest when Hugee galloped into the endzone for a 27-yard touchdown run, his second of the contest, to give the Purple & Orange a much needed and well deserved 44-13 home victory.
For the contest, Edward Waters posted 456 yards of total offense (325 passing, 131 rushing), while holding Morehouse to 270 yards offensively (147 passing, 123 rushing). Russell finished his afternoon going 18-24 passing for 280 yards, two TDs, and one int. Sophomore reciever
Johnny Jones for the fourth straight contest led the Tigers with nine catches for 138 yards, while Rembert finished with three catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. On the ground Hugee led the way with 16 carries for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while Thomas added six carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns of his own.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Kenard King led the way for Edward Waters with six total tackles, while
De'Angelo Sapp and
Quintorio Powell each had five for the Tigers. Linebacker
Sky Louis and defensive end
Jaren Wilson each tallied their first sacks of the season in the contest as well for EWU.
Edward Waters will look to their their positive moment on the road with them in their next contest on Saturday, September 30th. The Tigers will travel north on I-95 to face rival Savannah State in another SIAC gridiron clash.
