Miami Gardens, Florida-The Edward Waters women's volleyball squad made their way down to the 305 for a tri-match against both Florida National and Florida Memorial on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Tigers split both contests, taking a 3-1 decision over Florida National, but falling in straight sets to Florida Memorial.
MATCH #1: Edward Waters 3, Florida National 1:
Edward Waters took care of business in their first match of the day, thanks to a strong offensive effort, rolling to a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21) win over the Conquistadors of Florida National. The Lady Tigers racked up 48 total kills, including a season high 12 service aces, six blocks, 45 assists, and 64 digs in the match. They also wrapped up the match hitting .139.
Fatima Ramirez led the EWU offensive efforts with a match high 27 kills, followed by newcomer
Brandy Gilberry with eight and
De'Nyla Harlan with five. Gliberry also contributed five service aces in the match for EWU as well. Harlan turned away four shots from FNU,
Mataiya Barber dished out a match high 43 assists, while
Jenieth Guzman had a match high in digs with 15.
MATCH #2: Florida Memorial 3, Edward Waters 0:
Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, their success from the first match did not follow them to their second against rival Florida Memorial as the Lady Lions swept all three games (20-25, 18-25, 15-25) from EWU. The primary culprit for EWU's struggles in the match was their issues with errors as EWU had 15 compared to just eight from Florida Memorial. FMU also had a wide margin of success offensively with 42 kills to just 33 for EWU, and 10 service aces to four for the Lady Tigers.Â
Fatima Ramirez once again led all players with a match high 18 kills, followed by
De'Nyla Harlan with five, and
Mataiya Barber with five as well. Barber also had 23 assists, while Ramirez finished with nine digs as well for Edward Waters.
Edward Waters will next head to Montgomery, Alabama, where they will take part in the Warhawk Invitational, hosted by Auburn University-Montgomery on Friday, September 15th and Saturday, September 16th.
