Columbia, South Carolina-Already clinching the 2023 SIAC East Division crown, the Edward Waters softball squad made the trek to the capital city of "The Palmetto State" to matchup against Benedict in the final contest of the regular season. Behind the strength of timely hitting and another phenomenal pitching performance from
Jodasea Peterson, the Lady Tigers were able to come away with a hard fought 3-1 victory.
Edward Waters (39-7, 19-3 SIAC) hit the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning on
Jade Mention's two-RBI double that scored
Tiara Peters and
Jazmine Lamug to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead. The Purple & Orange added another run in the top of the fifth when
Katie Goodin came home on a Benedict (20-26, 10-12. SIAC) throwing error. The home team was able to avoid a shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring on an RBI single with two outs, but Peterson was able to induce a flyball out to thwart the comeback attempt and put another victory in the coffers of the Lady Tigers.
EWU racked up 10 hits in the matchup, while holding Benedict to five. Goodin led Edward Waters in the contest, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored. Peterson ran her record to 11-4 on the season, throwing a complete game, allowing just one earned run, and striking out 10.
Edward Waters now turns their attentions to the 2023 Cricket SIAC Softball Championship, hosted by Albany State University,  where the Lady Tigers will be the East Division's #1 seed. EWU will open play on Tuesday, May 2nd at 12:30pm against the West Division's #4 seed Lane College.Â
