Jacksonville, Florida-The Edward Waters softball squad is closing in on their first SIAC Regular Season East Division Championship as the Lady Tigers swept a three-game series against Clark Atlanta. EWU took Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 3-1 and completed the sweep on Sunday with a 7-6 victory.
(SATURDAY) GAME ONE: Edward Waters 4, Clark Atlanta 1:
Clark Atlanta University got things moving in the first inning, scoring a run on an RBI double to take a 1-0. lead.
Edward Waters pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. In the third
Katie Goodin doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run,
Caitlynne Lamug doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run, and
Kylah Gardner doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
Jodasea Peterson got the victory for the Purple & Orange, going pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out 11 and walking zero.
As a team in Game One, Edward Waters tallied 11 hits.
Laura Scott,
Kayla Saunders, and Gardner all managed multiple hits, with Scott leading with three hits in four at bats.
(SATURDAY) GAME TWO: Edward Waters 3, Clark Atlanta 1:
Both teams were strong in the circle in Game Two, but Edward Waters was able to outlast Clark Atlanta, winning 3-1. Edward Waters starting pitcher
Milani Sablan allowed just two hits to the Panthers, in seven innings of work and posted nine strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers collected six hits on the day.
Jamiah Holmes and
Tiara Peters all collected multiple hits in the contest, posting two hits a piece.
(SUNDAY) GAME THREE: Edward Waters 7, Clark Atlanta 6:
Despite seeing its five-run lead whittled down by the end, Edward Waters still held off Clark Atlanta for a 7-6 victory on Sunday to complete the three game sweep. Edward Waters earned the victory despite allowing Clark Atlanta University to score four runs in the third inning.
Edward Waters got their offense started in the first inning when
Caitlynne Lamug singled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs. The Lady Tigers took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning thanks again to Lamug with an RBI double that added two more runs.
Gracie Mejia earned the victory on the rubber for the Lady Tigers, going two and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out one and walking zero.
Jodasea Peterson threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen to earn the save for EWU.
Alyssa Charter-Smith started the game in the circle for Edward Waters. Charter-Smith surrendered six runs on three hits over two and a third innings
Edward Waters racked up ten hits.
Laura Scott and Lamug each had multiple hits in the matchup. Scott led three hits in four at bats.
The Lady Tigers will have their final non-conference contest of the season on Thursday, April 20th as they will head across town to face Trinity Baptist in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 5:00pm.
