Fort Valley, Georgia-Edward Waters opened the SIAC portion of their schedule on the road with a three-game series against the Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State last Friday and Saturday. The Lady Tigers were able take care of business and sweep all three games of the series to get a quality start in conference play.
GAME ONE (Friday, March 3rd): Edward Waters 1, Fort Valley State 0:
The series opener for both squads was a defensive slugfest, highlighted by the quality pitching of EWU's
Alyssa Charter-Smith and FVSU's Caprice Johnson. The only score of the contest came in the top of the sixth inning, when catcher
Laura Scott scored on a wild pitch. That proved to be all the Lady Tigers needed to take the series opener 1-0.
Charter-Smith was electric in the circle for EWU, throwing a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits, two walks, and struck out 10 Lady Wildcats in the game.
GAME TWO (Friday, March 3rd): Edward Waters 10, Fort Valley State 5:
FVSU scored the first two runs of the contest in the bottom of the first and second innings respectively to take a 2-0 lead. EWU was able to cut into the lead in the top half of the third thanks to a
Jazmine Lamug RBI triple that scored twin sister Caitlynne to make it a 2-1 contest.
Edward Waters took their first lead in the top of the sixth with a two RBI single, giving EWU a 3-2 advantage. The Lady Tigers put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh inning, scoring seven runs to take a commanding 10-2 lead. Fort Valley State scored scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but much too little, too late as Edward Waters clinched the contest and the series.
GAME THREE (Saturday, March 4th): Edward Waters 5, Fort Valley State 1:
Caitlynne Lamug opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI triple, then later
Tiara Peters hit an RBi sacrifice fly to give the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Fort Valley State made it a one run contest in the bottom of the with an RBi single.
Alyssa Charter-Smith connected on an three-RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the contest out of reach to give EWU a 5-1 lead to win the contest and sweep the series.
Edward Waters will hit the road to play in the SIAC Crossover on Friday and Saturday in Jasper, Alabama.
