Jasper, Alabama-After a tough first day at the SIAC Crossover and rainouts that canceled two of their games, the Edward Waters softball squad rallied to take their final two contests at the event on Monday. The Purple & Orange took a mercy rule, 11-0 victory over LeMoyne-Owen and closed out their action with an exciting 5-4 victory over Kentucky State.
GAME ONE: Edward Waters 11, LeMoyne-Owen 0 (5 Innings):
The Lady Tigers left no doubt in their opening contest of the day, earning a quick run-rule victory over LeMoyne-Owen. Five runs in the first inning, followed by another five in the second were major catalysts in the EWU victory.
Jamiah Holmes led EWU going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Alyssa Charter-Smith finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and three run scored. Charter-Smith also racked up an incredible four stolen bases in the contest as well.
Milani Sablan was dominant in the circle for Edward Waters, going 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits, and posted 12 strikeouts in the contest.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 5, Kentucky State 4:
Game Two of the day proved to be more of a battle for Edward Waters as they faced off against a resiliant Kentucky State ballclub. Two runs in the top of the sixth were enough to push the Lady Tigers over the top to get the win and sweep the day's action.
An RBI triple from
Caitlynne Lamug, and an RBI single from
Tiara Peters opened the scoring for the Lady Tigers in the top of the first, giving them a 2-0 lead. The Lady Breds were able to respond with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first to knot the contest up at 2-2.
After a scoreless second and third innings, Edward Waters was able to retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Alyssa Charter-Smith hit an RBI double to center field that allowed
Jazmine Lamug to score and take a 3-2 lead. Kentucky State once again was up to the challenge in the bottom half of the fourth, plating two runs to take a 4-3 lead.
The fifth inning went scoreless for both squads, but the sixth proved to be quite fruitful for the Lady Tigers.
Laura Scott connected on an two-RBI single to left field, scoring
Kayla Saunders and
Kylah Gardner to give EWU a 5-4 lead that they were able to maintain and earn the victory.
Gardner and Peters recorded multi-hit contests for Edward Waters, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively.
Shai-Ann Currie started the contest in the circle for EWU, going 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, four walks, and two strikeouts.
Alyssa Charter-Smith earned the victory in relief for the Purple & Orange, going 3.1 innings, allowing no hits, no earned runs, one walk, and striking out six Lady Breds.
Edward Waters will return home for on Wednesday, March 15th for a doubleheader against NAIA member Montreat College starting at 2:00pm at J. Gardner "Nip" Sams Memorial Softball Park. The contests will also be live streamed on the Edward Waters Athletics YouTube channel.
