Savannah, Georgia-The East Division #6 seed Edward Waters Lady Tigers continued their solid play in their first showing at the TIAA SIAC Basketball Championship presented by Cricket with a 67-62 upset victory over West Division #3 seed Kentucky State in their second round matchup Tuesday evening.
EWU (12-15, 6-12 SIAC) took control of the first quarter, leading 13-12 and added to their advantage, outscoring the Thorobreds (15-11, 12-7 SIAC) to take a 32-26 at the end of the first half. A third quarter comeback from KSU flipped things as the Thorobreds led 47-42 through three quarters of play. KSU pushed their lead to seven at the start of the fourth, but Edward Waters was not to be denied as they went on a run to cut the deficit down to one at 49-48 with 8:08 remaining. EWU went on an 11-2 run down the stretch of the fourth quarter seal the four point victory and advance to Thursday's quarterfinals.
The Lady Tigers hit 42.1% of their shots from the field, compared to 37.1% for the Thorobreds. EWU also hit 37.5 % of their shots from three to just 17.6% for KSU.
Emari Bell turned in her second consecutive double-double effort in the tournament with a game high 22 points and 12 boards, while
Paige Sanders finished with 12 points, two boards, and four assists.
Edward Waters will battle host school Savannah State for a spot in the semifinals on Thursday at 12:00pm.
