Softball Opens Season With Doubleheader Sweep Of Paine

Jacksonville, Florida-The 2022 Black College Sports Network HBCU Softball National Champion, Edward Waters softball squad was able to lift the lid on their 2023 campaign on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against Paine College at J. Gardner "Nip" Sams Park. The Lady Tigers were able to get a solid start to the season, sweeping Paine 6-2 in Game One and 8-3 in Game Two. The victories were also the first for new head coach Billy Rodgers, who took over the helm of the program after the departure of former head coach Brian Daley.

In the opener, Edward Waters dictated the pace, notching the first five runs of the contest over the first two innings. Paine cut into the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own, but the Lady Tigers were able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to effectively put the contest away. Starter Jodasea Peterson recorded three strikeouts in the contest with Jade Mention and Kylah Gardner each notching two hits in Game One.

In Game Two, the Lions scored the first run of the contest in the top of the first, before Edward Waters came back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first to take the lead for good. The Lady Tigers plated four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their advantage to 7-1, while Paine added another run in the top of the third to cut the lead to five. The two squads traded runs in the bottom of the fourth and the top of the fifth to end the scoring and preserve a doubleheader sweep for Edward Waters.

Shai-Ann Currie led EWU in the circle, going 7.0 innings and and striking out three Lady Lions in the matchup.

Edward Waters will return to the diamond on Monday afternoon with a 12:00pm doubleheader against the University of Fort Lauderdale at J. Gardner "Nip" Sams Memorial Park.
