Jacksonville, Florida-Edward Waters opened the home portion of their schedule on Thursday evening against the visiting Warriors of Webber International University at the Adams-Jenkins Complex. The Tigers flexed their superiority throughout the contest, earning a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-21) sweep of WIU.
Edward Waters (2-1) showed they were the better of the two sides both offensively and defensively in the match, earning double digit kills in all three sets, and outdigging Webber (1-2) 38-26. After starting set #1 down 3-1 early, the Tigers found their groove, going on an 8-2 run to take a 9-5 lead. WIU closed the gap to two at 13-11, but once again, EWU fired off another 8-2 run to take a 21-13 lead and were able to ride the momentum to a victory in the first set.
Webber International once again started the second set off well, taking a 5-2 lead. After an EWU timeout, EWU brought the lead down to two at 8-6, then kept the momentum rolling with a 7-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. Webber later cut the Edward Waters lead to two at 20-18, but the Tigers closed the set on a 5-0 run to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
In the final set, Edward Waters left little doubt rolling to 19-13 lead. Webber closed the gap to two at 20-18, but the Tigers were able to earn the final five points and earn their first sweep of Webber International in the young history of the program.
Evens Edouard led all scorers with 16 kills while
Kaelen Ingram chipped in with 13.
Kenyon Haynes dished out 42 assists in the match, while
Oneil Daley led EWU with nine digs.
The Tigers will next open SIAC play at home on February 24th in a rematch of last season's SIAC Championship Game against Central State at 7:00pm.
