Women's Volleyball Opens As East #1 Seed At SIAC Volleyball Championship

Jonesboro, Georgia-After another successful regular season season which culminated with the program's second consecutive East Division Championship, the 2022 SIAC Tournament runner-up Edward Waters women's volleyball squad looks to improve on that mark at the 2023 Cricket SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship. The single elimination tournament will take place Thursday, November 9th-Saturday, November 11th and will emanate from the Tsunami Volleyball Center.

The Purple & Orange will open tournament play against the West Division's #4 seed, the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University in a first round match on Thursday at 7:00pm. Edward Waters and Tuskegee met one time earlier this season at the SIAC Mini-Crossover in Mobile, Alabama on September 30th, which saw the Lady Tigers come away with a 3-1 victory. In the contest, Fatima Ramirez led EWU with 22 kills, four service aces, four blocks, and nine digs. Since joining the conference, EWU and Tuskegee have met four times, with the Purple & Orange winning all four meetings.

The Lady Tigers closed the regular season by obtaining their third consecutive season of 20 wins, finishing the year at 20-6 overall and 17-2 against SIAC competition. Edward Waters brings in the conference's second best point output with 1,393. points and a 15.83 points per set average, the league's second best hitting percentage (.219), second in assists per set (10.90), and second in kills per set (12.03). Individually, Ramirez leads the SIAC in kills per set (5.06), service aces per set (0.58), and points per set (5.92), while Naomy Vergez Varona is fourth in the league in kills per set (3.22), and points per set (3.83). Mataiya Barber once again leads the league in assists by a wide margin with 845 and an average per set of 9.60. Defensively, Damari Johnson is eighth in the conference in blocks (57), while Jenieth Guzman is seventh in the league in digs with 327 and a 3.89 digs per set average.
