Jacksonville, Florida-Historically for Edward Waters, matchups against teams from the Sunshine State and Peach Belt Conference have been quite problematic. Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, the story remained the same as EWU dropped a 6-2 home decision to Eckerd College on Tuesday evening at Glover Community Field & Stadium.
Edward Waters (5-2-2) was on its heels from the opening kickoff as a strong Eckerd squad (6-5-1) came int and dictated the pace for much of the 90:00 that were played. It only took three minutes in the first half for the visitors from St. Petersburg to crack the scoreboard first. EC added to their advantage again in the 9th and 21st minutes to take a commanding 3-0 advantage. The Lady Tigers were finally able to show some signs of fight in the match as
Libby Brown found the back of the net in the 34th minute off of a
Claudia Mate assist to cut the deficit to two just before the half.
The second half of play was a near identical copy of the first with Eckerd scoring three more goals in the 52nd, 58th, and 62nd minutes to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Brown once again scored for EWU in the 88th minute to bring the gap closer, but it was not enough as time expired as the Lady Tigers dropped their second consecutive match to a Sunshine State Conference opponent.
For the match, Eckerd outshot Edward Waters 17-8, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Brown was the lone goal scorer for Edward Waters, scoring two goals on three shots for the Purple & Orange.
Edward Waters will hit the road for two matches in North Carolina on Friday and Sunday. The Lady Tigers will battle Shaw University in an HBCU matchup in Raleigh on Friday at 6:00pm. Then on Sunday, The Purple & Orange will face Carolina University at 2:00pm in Winston-Salem.
