Albany, Georgia-The top spot in the SIAC East Division has been shared between Edward Waters and Albany State over the past couple of seasons. The same two teams met on the floor of the Jones Brothers HPER Complex to see who would surge ahead to take control of the division. Upon the end of the match, it would be the visiting Lady Tigers who would prevail with a 3-0 sweep of the Golden Rams to earn sole possession of first place in the division.
The Purple & Orange (15-5, 12-1 SIAC) and Albany State (14-11, 14-2 SIAC) jockeyed for position for a majority of the first set of the match. With the match tied at nine, Edward Waters went on a 5-2 run to get some breathing room leading 14-11. Albany State could only get as close as two points of the lead and EWU was able to earn a 25-22 win in Set #1.
Edward Waters appeared to be poised to earn an easy win in Set #2 leading late by five points at 20-15. ASU went on a run to close the gap and ultimately square the match at 25-25. An ASU service error and a huge block by.
Brandy Gilberry gave the Lady Tigers the final two points to win 27-25 and lead the match at 2-0.
Set #3 went back and forth with each team trading opportunities with the lead. The Lady Tigers were up to the challenge, building their advantage to as many as six points in the late stages of the sets. That lead was enough for them to take a 25-20 win to solidify the three-game sweep of their East Division foes.
If the phrase "Big Time Players, Make Big Time Plays, In Big Time Games", that moniker has to go to
Fatima Ramirez. The Belmopan, Belize native had a monster performance with a match high 21 kills, including two service aces, and nine digs.
Naomy Vergez Varona also turned in a solid performance with 11 kills, one block, and eight digs, and
De'Nyla Harlan finished with four kills and two blocks.
Mataiya Barber once again was solid as a setter with 35 assists, while libero
Jenieth Guzman had 12 digs on the night for EWU.
Edward Waters will return home on Sunday, October 22nd for two matches against another East Division and AME rival Allen University at 1:00pm and 5:00pm at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
