Cartersville, Georgia-The winning ways for the Edward Waters women's volleyball team continued as they went undefeated in their five matches at the SIAC Crossover on Friday and Saturday at Rally Volleyball at the LakePoint Sports Complex. The five victories for EWU pushed their winning streak to six consecutive victories, a new season high for the Lady Tigers.
FRIDAY SEPT. 24th: Edward Waters 3, Miles 0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-13):
The two-day crossover for Edward Waters began with a matchup against Miles. The Purple & Orange made quick work of the Golden Bears, sweeping the match in three straight sets. EWU racked up a total 48 kills, including seven service aces, eight blocks, 45 assists, and 61 digs. As a team against Miles, Edward Waters hit .261 for the match and held the Golden Bears to a .038 hitting percentage.
Naomy Vergez Varona and
Fatima Ramirez each had double-double performances in the match. Vergez Varona had a match high 17 kills and 11 digs, while Ramirez turned in her second consecutive double-double performance with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Audrianna Jones was also in double figures in kills with 11 for Edward Waters.
Mataiya Barber had a solid return to the lineup after missing the last few contests due to injury, racking up four service aces, and a match high 30 assists.
Saniya Spalding had a personal season high seven blocks, while
Andrea Diaz Merced led the way in Digs with 19.
FRIDAY SEPT. 24th: Edward Waters 3, LeMoyne-Owen 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-14):
The Lady Tigers continued their "sweepfest" by taking down the Lady Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College. EWU had an impressive 10 service aces in the match to go along with 42 kills, six blocks, 41 assists, and 36 digs. The Purple & Orange turned in a .368 hitting percentage in the match and held LOC to .035.
Naomy Vergez Varona had a match high 12 kills, including four service aces, to go along with two blocks, two assists, and seven digs.
Saniya Spalding had nine kills and three blocks, and
Audrianna Jones had seven kills.
Mataiya Barber dished out 37 assists, while
Andrea Diaz Merced chipped in with 11 digs.
SATURDAY SEPT. 25th: Edward Waters 3, Central State 1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-4, 25-17):
Day 2 of the crossover began with a morning matchup against the Marauders of Central State. EWU faced their first bit of adversity, dropping their first set of the game. However, the Lady Tigers showed their championship mettle, sweeping the next three sets of the contest, including a dominant 25-4 win in Set #3, to win the match and keep the winning streak in tact.
It was Edward Waters' defensive effort that helped in the victory as the Lady Tigers had 62 total digs in the match. The Lady Tigers also had 56 kills and 52 total assists to aid in win.
Naomy Vergez Varona led they way with a match high 23 kills.
Fatima Ramirez turned in her second double-double effort for in the crossover with 13 kills and 11 digs, while
Saniya Spalding had nine kills and four blocks.
Mataiya Barber had 35 assists and
Andrea Diaz Merced finished with 21 digs.
SATURDAY SEPT, 25th: Edward Waters 3, Kentucky State 1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-13, 25-21):
Saturday's second match of the day against Kentucky State was a near carbon copy of their first match against Central State with the Lady Tigers dropping the first set 26-24. EWU again rose to the occasion, taking the next three sets to remain undefeated at the crossover.
Another solid defensive effort helped the Purple & Orange en route to victory. Edward Waters had 57 digs and eight blocks in the match to go along with 51 kills, five service aces, and 48 assists. The dynamic duo of
Naomy Vergez Varona and
Fatima Ramirez were unstoppable, posting double-doubles in the match. Vergez Varona had a match high 21 kills and 11 digs, while Ramirez had 16 kills and 11 digs, her third double-double effort of the crossover and fourth on the season.
Saniya Spalding had seven kills and seven blocks in the match, while
Mataiya Barber posted 38 assists, and
Andrea Diaz Merced finished with 15 digs.
SATURDAY SEPT, 25th: Edward Waters 3, Lane 0: (25-23, 25-21, 25-22):
The final matchup of the crossover for EWU, saw the Lady Tigers face off against head coach
Dr. Brandon Reeves' alma mater in the Lady Dragons of Lane College. Lane showed some resistance against Edward Waters, but the Purple & Orange were too much for the Lady Dragons en route to a three set sweep and a sweep of all five matches at the crossover.
Fatima Ramirez led EWU with 12 kills while also contributing etwo assists.
Naomy Vergez Varona had 11 kills, eight kills, and two blocks.
Mataiya Barber finished with 32 assists, three service aces, and two blocks.
Catherine Richards finished with four blocks, while
Andrea Diaz Merced had 14 digs and four assists for the Lady Tigers.
Edward Waters will next head to St. Augustine to face Flagler College in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, September 27th at 7:00pm.
