Lady Tigers Drop SIAC Home Opener To Miles

Jacksonville, Florida-Since entering SIAC play, Edward Waters has not luck go their way. Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, the story continued on Saturday afternoon in a 64-60 loss to Miles in their SIAC home opener at the Adams-Jenkins Sports & Music Complex. 

Edward Waters (4-4, 0-3 SIAC) started Saturday's affair leading by as many as six points in the first quarter, ultimately taking a 13-8 advantage at quarter's end. The Lady Tiger lead ballooned to 12 at the 2:46 mark of the second quarter. Miles chopped the deficit down to six at halftime, trailing 28-22.

Miles opened the third quarter connecting on a three-pointer to cut the Lady Tiger lead to three at 28-25 early in the quarter. EWU went on a quick 5-0 run to push the lead back to eight at 33-25 with 8:35 remaining. the Lady Bears went on a run themselves, ultimately taking a 40-39 lead with 3:25 left in the third. Edward Waters and Miles jockeyed for position throughout the rest of the quarter, with the home team taking a 43-42 lead at the end of the third. Miles took the lead back to start the fourth, but Edward Waters captured it right back, leading by as much as four at 56-52 with 3:27 remaining. The Lady Bears then went on an 8-0 run that proved to retake the lead at 60-56 with 1:31 remaining. Edward Waters was able to tie the contest at 60-60 with 1:00 remaining, but a tough foul called on Paige Sanders allowed the Lady Bears to take the lead back by splitting a couple of free throws with :28 remaining. On the ensuing possession, EWU had a costly turnover that allowed Miles to extend their lead with free throws and extend the Lady Tiger losing streak to three.

EWU again had their issues rebounding the basketball, being outrebounded 36-29, including an 11-6 deficit on the offensive boards. Miles also outshot the Lady Tigers 42.1% to 40% in the matchup as well. Jourdan Avery led Edward Waters with 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Paige Sanders finished with 12 points and four boards, while Khadija Smith concluded her afternoon with 12 points and three rebounds.

The Lady Tigers will next step out of conference play on December 12th with a 6:00pm tipoff against CIAA opponent St. Augustine's at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
