Strong Second Half Spurs Lady Tigers Road Win At Coastal Georgia

Brunswick, Georgia-A dominant second half effort from Edward Waters helped them to a come-from-behind 71-63 road win over Coastal Georgia on Tuesday evening at Howard Coffin Gymnasium.

Edward Waters (2-0) darted out to a three-point advantage at 11-8 midway through the first quarter, before the Mariners (1-4) closed the quarter out on an 11-3 run to take a 21-16 lead. The Lady Tigers were able to fire back with a run of their own to start the second quarter on an 8-2 run to retake the advantage. But once again, CCGA answered with a large 10-3 run to take a five point lead at 37-32 into the locker room at halftime.

Coastal Georgia extended their advantage out to 10 points to start the third quarter at 42-32, but once again, the Purple & Orange were not to be denied. Led by eight consecutive points from junior transfer guard Tatum Hayes, EWU fired back with a 14-4 run to tie the match up at 46-46. The Lady Tigers closed the quarter out with a 6-0 run to take a 58-52 lead that they would not relinquish. CCGA came close to either tying or retaking the lead in the fourth quarter, but Edward Waters was able to hold off the Mariners' efforts to take the win and remain undefeated in the early portion of the season.

Edward Waters outshot Coastal Georgia 41.0% to 39.7% but the Mariners took a 47.8% to 31.1% edge in three-point shooting. The Lady Tigers effort from the charity stripe came in handy in the contest, connecting on 70% of their shots to 54.5% for  CCGA. EWU also took a slight two board advantage, 39-37, including a 7-5 edge in offensive rebounding. 

EWU had four players in double figures, led by Hayes with a game high 25 points and seven rebounds including going 7-of-13 from three-point range. Junior transfer forward Khadijah Smith finished with 14 point and seven rebounds, senior guard and co-captain Lee'Sha Henry finished with 13 points, and junior transfer point guard Isis Smith had 11 points and six rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

Edward Waters will next head to Petersburg, Virginia to take part in the CIAA/SIAC Challenge. The Lady Tigers will first face Virginia Union on Friday evening at 6:00pm, then on Saturday EWU will battle Virginia State at 4:00pm.
